Brookhaven Colored School - 10th Grade Class - 1931
The Brookhaven Colored School only educated students up to the tenth grade. After the tenth grade students had to go elsewhere to finish High School. One of the most popular schools during that day was McDonogh #35 of New Orleans, La. One student to attend that school after leaving Brookhaven Colored school was Alice B. Smith of the class of 1931. Founded in 1917 in the heart of Treme, one of the nation's oldest African-American communities, McDonogh 35 was the first college preparatory school for African Americans in New Orleans.
Among McDonogh #35's distinguished alumni are thousands of doctors, lawyers, educators, entrepreneurs, engineers, journalists and artists. Some of the most notable are the late Dr. Mack J. Spears, a Harvard grad, first black president of the Louisiana School Boards Association and New Orleans' first black school board member; the late Criminal Court Judge Israel Augustine, New Orleans businessman Larry Lundy (Class of 1968), owner of several dozen Pizza Hut franchises across Louisiana; Norbert Simmons (Class of 1964), co-owner of Bally's Casino, and Orleans Parish Civil Court Judge C. Hunter King('79).
Other notable alums include Kansas City Chiefs WR Sylvester Morris, Super Bowl champion/MVP Neil Smith ('84) of the Denver Broncos and NBA champion Gerard King ('91) of the San Antonio Spurs.
